Great site. I wonder if anyone could help me? I am looking for information about my great uncle who was a chindit. His name was Bernard Jones, service number: 11259659, he was in the 16th brigade, column 51/69 royal artillery and his rank was Gunner. He died 26/03/1944. Does anyone know of anybody who served in the same brigade/column? Even better, did anyone know of him? Thanks

Brigadier General Tom Brodie was my fathers cousin, they grew up together on nearby farms in Northumberland, my fathers father was the Estate Manager of the then Lord and Lady Pumphery on a large estate just north of Morpeth Northumberland.

During the outbreak of the second world war my father left the Northumbrian Police force to join the Tank Core, he was posted for initial training at Catterick, at that time his cousin Tom was the Commanding Officer, my father also named Tom was invited to his office for tea and a chat. That cup of tea cost my father dearly with the Regimental Sergeant Major of the day.

I have both photographs of both Toms in their uniforms in my study and there they will stay. Now there’s tale to tell.

I have 2 reasons for leaving a message; firstly, my father, Harold Pettinger, served in Burma with the 2nd York & Lancaster. Luckily for me and my brothers and sister, he was injured during jungle training just before deployment and had to transfer to REME, helping to keep the troops in the jungle supplied. He's still going strong at 87 and is only now telling us all what he did in the war.

Secondly, as part of my research I have come across an old copy of typed memoires of another Chindit that haven't been published. These make fantastic reading. Unfortunately, I can't find any reference to this soldier and I'd like to find out more about him if I can, if only to send a copy of his story to any surviving family, if they haven't already got one.

He is Major R. P. J. (Paddy) DOBNEY.

Any information would be gratefully received.

I'd be happy to send a copy for publication on this site but I feel I could only do that with the permission of any surviving family, or Paddy himself if still alive. Hope to here from anyone out there who may know more.

I beleive my father was in the Chindits.but have no records. I know he was in India and Burma and suffered from malaria for years. His name was John(Jack) Hill from Shropshire. He was moved from the navy into the army and Mom didn't see him for 5 years. My uncle said he was behind enemy lines, but he never spoke of his army days. Anyone who remembers the name please get in touch.
